The Souhegan High School Summer Institute was originally founded in the fall of 1999 by Christopher Brooks and Frank Gallo as the Summer Institute for European Studies. The Institute is an intensive program, designed for students interested in achieving additional academic credit toward their high school diploma. Since its first session in the summer of 2000, the Institute has continued to grow and expand in a variety of manners, such as adding more faculty, students and a variety of classes. In previous years, we have had students enroll from various school districts as well as Souhegan, including Hollis-Brookline, Merrimack, Nashua and Fitchburg, MA. In the summer of 2005, the Institute was even given the privilege of having U.S. Ambassador Lawrence Butler give a guest lecture one day on his experiences in Eastern Europe and Northern Ireland. The upcoming summer of 2008 is no exception for the Institute's continued expansion. This summer, the Institute will continue to encompass a wide range of studies available to students by having separate divisions in which students can choose to enroll: European Studies or Global Ethics. Students wishing to attend the Institute must choose a division to which they will apply. The European Studies division, the Institute's founding theme, is designed specifically to give students the ability to pursue advanced studies in topics central to Europe through the lenses of art and architecture, geography, historical drama, historical studies, philosophy and politics. The Global Ethics division is designed to give students an opportunity to examine societal issues on a global scale through the lenses of ethics, philosophy, politics, and economics. More information regarding the individual divisions can be found in the Curriculum section of the website. As in previous years, the Institute has the extension of two college credit classes available for seniors if they meet the prerequisites. These classes are: History of England I and Problems in Philosophy. Through these classes, which meet in the evenings at Souhegan, students will receive college credit from Chester College of New England. The continued success of the Institute will allow for its further expansion in the years to come. |
