No Child Left Behind

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 incorporates President Bush's plan for the reform and improvement of America's schools. There are four components to the plan:

•stronger accountability for results

•greater flexibility and local control (relative to how those results are achieved)

•expanded options for parents, and

•emphasis on proven methods to assist all children to learn.

This Act builds upon and expands the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The NCLB Act redefines and expands the federal role in public education throughout our country. This legislation incorporate many of the basic foundations of ESEA such as equity and accountability, and updates and expands them.

The Goals of the NCLB act include:

  • All students will reach high standards, at a minimum, attaining proficiency or better in reading and mathematics by 2013-2014.

  • By 2013-2014, all students will be proficient in reading by the end of third grade.

  • All limited English proficient (LEP) students will become proficient in English.

  • By 2005-2006, all students will be taught by highly qualified teachers.

  • All students will be educated in learning environments that are safe, drug-free, and conducive to learning.

  • All students will graduate from high school.

Each school district publishes annually a "Report Card" which is designed to inform parents and taxpayers of important elements related to their schools. To see the district report card of each district within SAU 39, click on the district web site:
