SAU #39 Mission:  We will engage, support, and challenge all learners.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Village School marked the 250,000 minutes of reading mark (1/4 of the way to a million) at our SRA on November 20th.  Sixth graders presented skits on the theme of a “quarter” and all students received bookmarks to remind them of our Million Minute goal.  Thank you to our second graders who also performed that day and shared poems about Thanksgiving.  Congratulations also to our 5th graders for accumulating the most minutes and to the top 5th grade readers, Madison Angulas and Eric Kolb, who, in recognition of their accomplishment, have been selected to be the Town Tree Lighters tonight.

Last night, our literacy coach/teacher, Ann Allwarden presented a parent workshop on reading comprehension strategies.  The six strategies discussed, and being utilized with your children, are making connections, questioning, making inferences, visualization, determining importance, and synthesizing information.  More detail about the strategies is available through the book Strategies that Work:  Teaching Comprehension for Understanding and Engagement by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis which is available, along with a wide variety of other titles, from our parent lending library located in the main office.

Congratulations to Mont Vernon’s First Lego League team who will be representing the region at the State competition on December 8th in Nashua.  MVVS students Stefan DeShazo, Max Hoerhold, David Kibbie, James Kibbie, and Matt Lefebvre are part of this local team which, as a rookie team, won the Team Spirit Award at the regional competition.  We are very proud of them and wish them luck next Saturday.

If you are receiving this paper edition of my parent letter, you can switch over to the electronic version by sending an e-mail to Charlotte Jameson.  Please include a note in the “re.” line asking to be added to our e-mail lists.
