MRSA is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus auresus (Staph, for short, is a bacterial infection). These resistant staph infections have occured for a long time in the hospital setting in surgical wounds, bloodstream infections and pneumonia. Now, we are hearing about CA-MRSA infections that are appearing out in a few communities in Concord, NH, Virginia, and Mississippi. MRSA causes skin infections that look like boils or pimples which can be red, swollen, painful, or have drainage. If untreated, there can be complications which lead to more serious problems (bloodstream infections, pneumonia and wound infections). See your healthcare provider if a questionable area is not getting better. MRSA is spread by direct skin-to-skin contact. PREVENTION includes: thorough handwashing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, keeping cuts/abrasions clean and covered, avoiding touching other people's wounds or bandages, and avoiding the use of other people's towels or razors.
