Rachel’s Challenge

copy of the principal's letter

January 2, 2008

 Dear Parents / Guardians:

On January 17, 2008 our 6th graders have been invited to join AMS middle school as they present a very special program, titled “Rachel’s Challenge”.  Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999.  Rachel’s acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for the most life-changing school program in America.  The universal message of kindness and compassion told by Rachel’s story has been heard by students and parents all over the world.  The intent behind the program is to help kids start a “chain reaction” of acts of kindness.  It has been documented that this program has prevented numerous suicides, drastically reduced bullying, and in four known instances prevented a planned school shooting.

There are four parts to this program.  Part one will be held in our guidance class time. Students will receive an overview of the original incident, explore the www.RachelsChallenge.com website in our lab and read an essay written by Rachel Scott which was the inspiration for the program. On the morning of the 17th, our students will take a bus to AMS and join grades 6, 7, and 8 in an assembly hosted by either a member of Rachel Scott’s family or a friend of the Scott family.  The message in this presentation is “why” acts of kindness, compassion and tolerance are so important in today’s times.  After the assembly our students will return to MVVS to process the message and the feelings that it will inevitably evoke.  Part three is after school training for students interested in learning “how” to start these chain reactions of kindness.  The final part is a presentation for our community at 7:00PM in the Souhegan High School Theater.

On the 17th this program will also be delivered to students at Souhegan High School.  The program is tailored for its audience, so what the high school students see will be somewhat different from what the middle school students will attend.  In each presentation there is a video portion; for the middle school the video does not contain any of the graphic scenes.  However, this is a very powerful presentation, and they do talk about the shooting and show interviews with students who were there.

For further information, we recommend your reviewing the www.Rachelschallenge.com website. We encourage you to allow your child to be a part of this program; however, should you have any concerns please contact Barbara Belak or me directly.

 Sincerely,

Meredith Nadeau

Principal

In September, we worked on Team Building and School/Study Skills including listening, note taking, homework planning and reading skills.  In October, we are discussing Drug/Substance Awareness and thanks to PTA support, each student will receive a token reminder of the importance of healthy lifestyles and choices.  We also conducted a Bus Safety lesson for grades K and 1. Our own Howard Brown brought a bus and the students practiced proper behavior on the bus and safe exits and street crossings.
