Summer Activities for Pre-Kindergarten Children
Ø Eat dinner as a family and share educational experiences. Ø Read a poem and let your child guess what the next rhyming word will be. Ø Share memories of a special holiday with your child. Ø Make puppets out of small paper bags and put on a puppet show. (Old socks are great also.) Ø Take a walk and look for signs of the season. Talk about what you see. Ø Create a family tree and have your child draw portraits of family members. Ø Help your child decorate a box. Put it by the door to hold homework and books. Ø Play a game after reading the directions together. Ø Find a cozy place to read a favorite story and have your child retell the story to you. Ø When driving with your child, turn off the music and talk about the day’s events or look for colors, letters and numbers on signs. Ø Read directions for a project and then create the project together. Ø Watch a nature program on TV and talk about what you see. Ø Let your child see YOU reading and writing. Ø Cut a comic strip apart for cutting practice. Sequence the pictures first/middle/last. Ø Choose a new recipe. Read it together and have fun making it. Ø Cut words out of the newspaper. Arrange them to make a new sentence. Ø Have a treasure hunt. Leave picture or word clues to find the treasure. Ø Read a new book, or an old favorite, to your child. Ø Start reading a story and stop before the end. Ask your child to predict the ending. Ø Leave a note for your child to discover sometime during the day. Ø Help your child create a map of your home. Ø Have your child describe a family member, or friend, for you to guess who it is. Ø Take a walk. Close your eyes and listen for the sounds of summer. Make a list of the sounds. Ø Help your child plant flower or vegetable seeds. Make a graph to chart their growth. Ø Have your child write a note to a friend or relative. Be sure to mail it! Ø Start telling a familiar story. Have your child write a new ending. Ø Have your child make a list of enjoyable things to do. Describe what makes them fun. Ø Help your child write and illustrate a story about a favorite animal. Ø Have your children plan a fun family activity. Ø Have fun reading and writing with your child. Ø Read with your child 15 minutes each day. Star or initial a calendar square for that day. If you skip a day, then read for 30 minutes the next day and star both days. Ø At the end of the month, sign this calendar and return it to your child’s teacher in the fall.
