Mr. Young Shares A Special Story

We were excited to have Mr. Young read a special story during lunch. We want to, once again, thank all of the parents who took time out of their busy days to share a favorite book. Thank you, Mr. Young!

Image-Making Underway

Fairies fluttering, sharks searching, moms looking, and houses waiting are all just a part of the wonderful characters and scenes created through our Image-Making collages. Thanks to the help of Mrs. Geskos, Mrs. Young, Mrs. Biedrzycki, and Mrs. Kalinowski we have a great jumpstart on our stories and main characters.

Although the Image-Making books will not be ready for the upcoming

Writing Festival which occurs the week of May 19th-23rd, we will be presenting them to parents at our Authors’ Tea on June 11th at 1:30. Mark the date on your calendars!

Over the next month we will continue to create the individual pages and writings for our Image-Making stories.

Poetry Books Are Published And Ready!

The colorful books filled with wonderful poetry are just waiting for the upcoming Writing Festival. They will be displayed at the Wilkins school on the following dates:

May 20th from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm

May 21st from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm

The books will be located in the first grade section with a special table designated for our class. We will also have five of our favorite class big books to preview. Please leave your child’s book at the table. They are on display for all to see. They will be safely returned to Clark School following the festival.

There will also be our annual book fair at the festival.

We hope that all of you will be able to visit at a time convenient to your schedules. Our class will be going to the book fair and festival on May 21st at 12:30 weather permitting. More information will be coming regarding the book fair and selections.

The Village School Chorus Visits Clark School

We all enjoyed listening to Mrs. Findlay’s chorus from Mont Vernon perform their many songs. What a wonderful group! Their strong voices filled the multipurpose room with excitement and joy.

Time and Money ~ the Focus In Math

Thank you for the many notes regarding the math money game sent home recently. It was my pleasure to send along the fifty cent pieces. So many of the children had never seen them. It was also nice to hear that so many of the children were enjoying the use of the game at home.

We are working on time to the hour and half hour, but many of the children are excited about learning to the minute! We will continue to explore the use of time, reading analog and digital clocks, and working with time schedules.

Many of the children have demonstrated their knowledge of the basic math facts during our problem solving exercises. They have proudly mentioned the flash card practice at home. Please continue to work on the addition and subtraction facts. Being able to use these facts for problem solving and calculations is so helpful.

At school we have been doing "mad minutes" as a form of practice for basic math facts.

Literacy Connection With Mrs. Martina

Square lettuce?

Mrs. Martina shares a wonderful book, Eating the Alphabet, by Lois Ehlert. This book related to our vegetable study earlier this year. As she read the alphabet book, the children took turns distinguishing between the fruits and vegetables.

Following the story, the children created their own paper salad.

                          Salad, anyone?

Museum of Science Brings Science Magic to Clark School

The multipurpose room at Clark School was highly energized when the Boston Museum of Science brought their science magic show. The children learned that magic often involves the use of scientific and mathematical thinking. They were asked to use their five senses to try to figure out the various tricks presented. They witnessed a piece of material being pulled out from under a pile of tubs, a balloon being pieced but not popped, and lying on a bed of nails without getting hurt.

Screams of excitement could be heard as each trick was performed. Following each presentation, an explanation was given to explain how each trick was mastered. Math and science were key roles in all.

One of the exciting tricks involved the presenter lying on a bed of nails with a cinderblock on her stomach. Mrs. Capprini then used a sledge-hammer to crack the cinderblock without hurting the presenter. Yikes!

Pierced but not popping!

Room 10 Performs Their Own Science Magic

Using the scientific method, we have continued to attempt our own experiments. Here are the steps we follow:

  • Present the question
  • Determine the materials needed
  • Make a hypothesis
  • Follow the procedure
  • Write the conclusion

It is always an exciting time during our science experiments. Here are just a few of the procedures which are included in our Math Science Log:

Super Bunny

Testing the hypotheses!

Tipsy

Will the water spill out when he turns over the glass?

Hearing With Our Teeth?

Learning all about sound traveling to our eardrum was fun!

Dylan A. Moves to Oregon

We said our good-byes to Dylan the week before vacation. He has moved to Oregon. Although he misses his friends and teachers here at Clark School, he has already made many new friends and likes his new teacher. He continues to look forward to going to school each day.

A special thank you to all of the children who secretly completed their pages for his memory book. It was so nice to hear the many comments shared in our good-bye circle.

Plans For Our Volunteer Luncheon Are Underway

We are planning on our Volunteer Luncheon to be held on Friday, May 30th, from 11:15 to 12:00. Mrs. Niland and Mrs. Gould provide a salad bar in appreciation for all the parents who regularly volunteered this year.

The children in our classrooms should still bring or get a school lunch as usual. The luncheon itself is for the parents and siblings coming to the event. The students in our classrooms will be allowed to sample the dessert table after our guests have been served.

Invitations will be sent home with RSVPs required. We will need to plan for seating and food.
