September 7, 2010
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Attached is a list of the genre required for the book reports and corresponding projects to be assigned this year. Our first book report and project is due on Thursday, October 7, 2010.
For this month the student may choose a book from any genre. This should be approved by me ahead of time.
After reading the book, the student will be expected to complete both a written report, which will be presented to the class orally, as well as a project. In addition to providing detailed instructions in class for this assignment, specific directions will be sent home in a timely manner. The corresponding project for October is a puppet representing the main character of the story. This does not have to be ornate. Hopefully, it can be made of materials found around the house such as an old sock, buttons, yarn, etc.
Directions for the written portion plus a planning chart have been included for you to keep as a reference. In addition, a sample of the evaluation sheet that I will be using is attached for your information.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Zall
Please sign this portion, cut off and return. Save the rest as a guide for this project.
I am aware of the October book report/project date and requirements.

Written Book Report Requirements
You will need to include the following:
- a cover showing the title, author, illustrator (if any), and an
illustrated scene from the book. PLEASE COLOR.
- a handwritten or typed page included inside the cover with the
following information: title, author, illustrator (if any), main
character, 2 paragraph summary, and a recommendation.
Your name should go in the bottom right-hand corner of the cover.
Neatness, spelling, the quality of your writing, and following directions all count.
TIPS FOR WRITING A SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATION:
· Use sticky notes as you read and record a few important facts in each chapter. Do this as you read the story so that you don’t forget the important events.
· When you finish the book, use your sticky notes to help you write your two paragraph summary.
· In your recommendation, please tell about one event that happened in the story that you liked or did not like. It’s ok to say that you did not like the book and would not recommend it, however you should be able to explain why.
Have fun!
