Citizenship: What does it mean to be a good citizen?

Harcourt Social Studies People We Know, Unit 1.

Our first unit of the year will be an exploration of citizenship. We will discuss how citizens can be responsible in their communities. Our current topic of discussion focused on rights and laws. Many students could state laws that pertained to children such as you have to be a certain age to vote. They knew they were too young but they were uncertain as to the right age for voting. Their guesses ranged from 16 to 50! It was fun talking about different laws (seatbelts, bike helmets, movie rating restrictions, front seat restrictions with airbags). The children had lots to say and have already proven themselves pretty savvy in government issues!

September 17 is Constitution Day. We will delve into our US Constitution and what rights and freedoms it guarantees all Americans.
