Physical Education

Mr. April

We believe that an elementary school physical education program should have a variety of learning experiences, both physical and mental, in order to develop a totally fit individual. A physical education program must meet the needs of each individual child's it services. It has to be flexible enough to provide a challenge for the exceptional student as well as provide success and fun for all students. It is our opinion that the cornerstone of an elementary school physical education program should be based on a child’s most basic need to have fun.

Keeping this philosophy in mind, the physical education program at the Wilkins Elementary School is one of a multi-concept approach that enables us to effectively meet the needs of our students. A combination of various concepts comprises, our program. The most prevalent of these concepts are Movement Education, Carryover/Leisure Activities, Group Initiative/Outward Bound Activities, as well as many others.

It is our belief that this multi-concept approach to physical education allows us to successfully attain the goals that have been set for the program which are as follows:

Goals

  1. Create a positive attitude toward physical activity.
  2. To aid in the development of a positive self-image.
  3. To meet the needs of each student, as an individual.
  4. To develop students to their utmost potential.
  5. To encourage cooperation and good sportsmanship between students in large and small group settings.
  6. To give the students exposure to many activities from which they can develop locomotor skills and non-locomotor skills, manipulative skills, perceptual motor skills and body control skills.
  7. To develop a basic understanding of the various sports activities.
  8. To encourage students to build a repertoire of lifetime activities.
  9. To encourage students to obtain and maintain a level of fitness conducive to their own capabilities.

Examples of activities that may be used to reach the goals set for the physical education program are as follows:
