Curriculum Enrichment Program

Toni Toniolo, Director

The Curriculum Enrichment Program of Wilkins School provides the opportunity for students to work at the School
Store; The Wilkins Tribune, our school newspaper; and The Wilkins Kids' Magazine, a literary journal of students' writing and artwork.  It also provides math enrichment for third and fourth graders in problem solving and through participation in The Continental Math League.

The School Store is open on Wednesdays, during lunch recesses.  It is a profitable business, with large numbers of shoppers each week. There is an overwhelming interest in becoming School Store Managers and the students must pass a “change-making test” in order to be hired for the position.  The store managers’ duties include:

working with others on a team
being polite to everyone, especially customers
ordering new items to sell in the store
                       counting money and making change
                       taking inventory of merchandise
                       unpacking orders of new merchandise
displaying merchandise in an attractive manner

A crew of reporters from the fourth grade publishes the school newspaper.  These students focus on understanding the purpose and style of newspaper articles, develop procedures for interviewing students and staff, photograph events, and write articles for the newspaper.  They continue to develop new sections for The Wilkins Tribune and choose topics to include.  Their duties include:

      working together on a team
interviewing people
photographing events at school
writing and editing stories
writing advertisements
putting the newspaper together
delivering the paper to classes

Students from the third grade edit and publish The Wilkins Kids' Magazine.  It is their responsibility to collect, review, and choose which entries will be included in the magazine.  Then they determine the layout for each edition of the magazine.  Their duties include:

                      working together on a team
writing and editing stories and poems
choosing stories, poems, and artwork to include
                      adding graphics
                      deciding an attractive layout
                      putting the magazine together
                      delivering the magazine to classes
